Acquire the skills to have conversations that change practice
Whether your school team is just beginning to think about equity or has been doing this work for years, building affirming schools requires successfully coaching for equity. In this workshop, participants will learn to pursue a more just, equitable school system using the tools of Transformational Coaching from Elena Aguilar’s best-selling books The Art of Coaching (2013) and Coaching for Equity (2020). In Coaching for Equity, Elena offers an expanded framework for how to have coaching conversations that result in behavior change and includes a comprehensive set of new tools.
This workshop provides participants with structures within which to practice these conversations and more deeply understand how to use these new tools. You’ll learn about and practice six kinds of coaching conversations that center equity, and you’ll see masterful demonstrations of these conversations. You’ll also grapple with the relationship between your own identity and the systems of oppression that permeate our schools, develop a vision for what equity would look like in your work, hone the skills to facilitate compassionate coaching conversations about identity, and strengthen your resolve to disrupt inequities in your communities. This workshop is a satisfying balance between building skill and knowledge and also attending to our need to build internal reserves and resilience when leading for equity.

What people say
Elena masterfully demystifies the work of equity. I am walking away from this not only a better coach, but also with actionable steps to continue to make an impact on my community in regards to equity and inclusion.Alicia
I have lost count of how many times both during and since taking this workshop that I have applied the principles of coaching for equity in conversations with teachers. This workshop inspired me to lean into courageous conversations.Madeline
This course made explicit the dynamic nature of the external experience of coaching in relationship to the internal experience. It provided me with the time and support to begin to intentionally build my awareness of this practice. I appreciate being driven by my intentions and values and not my role and the institution that currently employs me. By attending to this, I am attending to my purpose for walking on this planet. Thank you!Janae
In the 3 weeks that this course took place, I engaged in 31 coaching conversations with my own teachers outside of it. In retrospect, those 31 conversations feel like a training montage where I saw tangible progress and increased success in my coaching. I could feel my listening, compassion, finesse, and skill growing as I went. It was slow at first, in the way that growth not derived from gimmicks, but from true development is, and by the end of the course I realized there were things I was doing with confidence and calmness in coaching conversations that felt out of my reach just 3 weeks ago.John
