Do You Have an Anchor for the Year Ahead?
August 26, 2024
When I founded Bright Morning, I had zero business experience. From my past leadership roles, I knew I needed a clear vision for who I needed to be as an entrepreneur and leader. I first looked to “successful” business people for inspiration. I read what they wrote, studied how they were, and tried to be just like them.
I mimicked them pretty well. And I was deeply unfulfilled.
My leadership didn’t feel like “me.” I felt like I was an actor in a play. Not only was I unfulfilled personally, I also wasn’t getting the results I wanted and believed were possible.
This was one of the many moments in my life when I was thankful for my coaching skills and my community of skilled coaches. With the help of these resources, I spent time crafting my personal vision. I anchored in my values, the company mission and vision, my strengths, my commitment to learning, and opportunities for growth. I emerged with the clarity I needed to lead (not play “leader”).
It is nearly impossible to fulfill your vision if it isn’t rooted in who you are. Without this anchor, you are much more likely to drift and one day look around and not know how you got there.
The beginning of the school year is the ideal time to ground yourself in who you want and need to be in your role this year.
Now, let’s make that a reality.
Take 5 minutes and start here:
- Three minutes: Generate a list of analogies for a coach/leader/fill-in-the-blank (whatever your role is)
- One minute: Identify which analogy feels most aligned with who you want and need to be this year
- One minute: Find or draw a picture you will keep to recall this commitment. Stick it somewhere you will see it daily
